Gelderland, The Netherlands
Gelderland, The Netherlands
Nijmegen is a beautiful city even though you might find it a bit crowded.
Enjoying the Nature:
There are lot of nature routes for walking and biking in and around Nijmegen. The famous of them is the Berg en Dal route, N-70 (in Dutch). Where you can also see the thickest tree in the Netherlands- 500yr old Kabouterboom (~8.5m in circumference) and the smallest village of NL (a church and 2 farm houses!) from the opposite hills.

If you like skating, there is skate route as well as Triavium ice-skating ring in the winter months.
Not to be missed are the two historical parks in the centre of Nijmegen:

Visiting Museums:
If you enjoy visiting musea, you can subscribe for the Museum Card and a majority of the Museum in the Netherlands will be free to visit. It cost 50 Euro for a year or 25 Euro if you're under 18!(+5 Euro 1 time registration fee).
If you're not a Museum fan and want to visit only a couple of them, then the twice a year free or reduced entry to many museums is the best option. Once a year there will be a "Nationale museumdag" National Museum dag where you can visit Museums on a reduced rate and some even free of charge. For the last several years Province Gelderland has been holding a free museum day in October (for 2013 - 19th Oct), where you are allowed to visit a number of Musea in GLD free of charge or for EUR 1. See the links for more info on Museum Weekend in April as well as the Free museum day in Gelderland in October.
The 2nd weekend of September 2013 is Monument weekend and in Nijmegen many of the monuments are open and free to visit. See link for details Monument Day. Apart from this there is the largest medieval festival in NL that is held in Nijmegen in August by Limburg brothers. The Sunday of the weekend is also the "Tower Day", where you can gain free access to many of the old towers in the city .
